Start with the decision, the information you have and the people who need to use the findings.

## Explain the decision

A first conversation does not need to begin with a list of reports. Begin with the decision you are trying to make. You might be considering land, developing a design or working out what to investigate next. That context gives a consultant something useful to work with.

Explain who will use the findings and when. A team preparing a design workshop may need a different conversation from a buyer reviewing a potential acquisition.

## Share the available picture

Bring together the location, proposed use and information already available. Note where reports came from, when they were prepared and which areas they cover. A simple inventory often makes gaps easier to discuss.

Unknowns are part of the brief. Separate confirmed information from assumptions, and make access or ownership questions visible early.

## Agree the next step

A useful scope connects an activity to a question and an output. Ask what a proposed investigation is intended to establish, what its limits are and how the findings will be handed over.

The result of the first conversation may be a short information request rather than a large commission. Clarity about that next step helps the project team decide how to proceed.
